Which Alabama AGPCNP Program Is Right for You?

UAB — Choose UAB if you want a nationally ranked in-state program (top 10 DNP, top 11 MSN per U.S. News) with flat-rate online tuition at $723/credit regardless of residency. Note that a GRE is required if your undergraduate GPA falls below 3.2.

University of South Alabama — Choose USA if you want the lowest in-state tuition at $594/credit with no GRE required across any track. Its certificate starts at just ~$14,256, making it the most accessible and affordable in-state option at every degree level.

Chamberlain University — Choose Chamberlain if clinical placement logistics are your top concern; its Practicum Commitment® kicks in after three documented denials and guarantees preceptor and site support. It’s a solid middle-ground option with a structured immersion schedule.

South University Online — Choose South University if you hold an ADN or nursing diploma and want a direct RN-to-MSN pathway without earning a separate BSN first. It also carries the lowest minimum GPA threshold (2.5) of any program in this guide.

Walden University — Choose Walden if you want maximum schedule flexibility with dedicated clinical placement support through the Practicum Pledge®. Be prepared for the highest tuition on this list, especially at the DNP level ($960/credit).

Alabama MSN AGPCNP Programs

USA is the lowest-cost MSN option at ~$26,730 (45 credits at $594/credit), matching UAB’s credit count but undercutting it by roughly $6,000.

Walden and South University use quarter credits — worth noting since a “58-credit” program in quarter hours is roughly equivalent to a 39-semester-credit program.

BSN-entry students looking for the fastest completion path will find Walden at approximately 2 years full-time, though at a significantly higher price.

DNP AGPCNP Programs in Alabama

Only USAUAB, and Walden offer DNP tracks.

USA has the lowest BSN-to-DNP cost at ~$40,986–$51,678 and also the most affordable MSN-to-DNP same-specialty path at ~$21,384 — a significant advantage for nurses already holding an AGPCNP MSN.

UAB’s BSN-to-DNP is mid-range at ~$57,117 and carries a nationally ranked reputation; Walden’s BSN-DNP at ~$86,400 is the most expensive but offers the most scheduling flexibility. UAB students should also budget approximately $800/year for required on-campus DNP intensives.

Post-Graduate Certificate Programs

Certificate programs are available at all five schools, making them the most competitive segment of this comparison.

USA offers the lowest starting cost at ~$14,256 if you’ve already completed the three support courses (“3 Ps”); otherwise, expect up to ~$19,602.

UAB‘s certificate starts at ~$19,521 but increases based on individual gap analysis — and it is summer-entry only, which limits enrollment windows.

Walden’s certificate is the priciest at ~$31,580, though a Fast Track option (18 credits) is available for those with active APRN credentials.

Clinical Placement Support

Clinical placement logistics vary widely across these programs. The two in-state schools take a faculty-assisted approach, while Chamberlain and Walden offer the most formalized placement guarantees.

UAB — Faculty coordinates placement and the student contracts directly with a certified NP, CNS, or physician preceptor in their local area. An on-campus clinical skills intensive is required before specialty clinical courses begin.

University of South Alabama — Students are encouraged to secure their own site; the College of Nursing will assist if needed. Full admission is contingent on securing an approved clinical site by the end of the first semester. A mandatory on-campus Clinical Skills Intensive (CSI) is required before specialty courses begin.

Chamberlain University — Offers the Practicum Commitment®: after documenting three formal site denials, Chamberlain guarantees assistance in securing a preceptor and site. MSN students must show three denials; certificate students must show five before accessing this support.

South University Online — No placement guarantee. Students are responsible for securing their own approved preceptor. A mandatory pre-clinical evaluation (NSG6021) must be passed before practicum enrollment.

Walden University — Offers the Practicum Pledge® with a dedicated Field Placement Team and Practicum Advantage™ support. If a student is unable to secure placement after several attempts, the team steps in to assist. Virtual Walden Grand Rounds supplement clinical prep with real-case scenario practice.
