Texas Woman’s University offers 2 Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner tracks:

Both programs are approved for distance education with 100% online learning, though clinical experiences must occur in Texas and the program is currently limited to Texas residents only.

Master of Science in Nursing – AGPCNP

The estimated cost for the MSN-AGPCNP program is $25,920 and would take approximately 2-2.5 years to complete on a full-time basis.

MSN Curriculum

The 45-credit program combines core graduate nursing courses (18 credits) with specialized adult-gerontology primary care coursework (27 credits):

Introduces core adult–gerontology concepts for safe primary care practice. Emphasizes health promotion, risk reduction, and care of diverse patients ages 13 and up.

NURS 5503 – Principles of Adult & Geriatric Care Management, Diagnostics & Common Interventions (3 credits)
Covers diagnostic reasoning, care management, and procedural skills for adult and older patients. Focuses on unique clinical considerations when functioning in the NP role.

NURS 5323 – Primary Care Management of the Adolescent, Adult & Older Adult (3 credits)
Reviews primary care standards for adolescents through older adults. Students develop systematic approaches to assessment, treatment, and follow-up across settings.

NURS 5523 – AGPCNP Clinical Practicum I: Introduction to Adult Primary Care (3 credits)
Provides initial supervised clinical experience in adult primary care. Students apply foundational knowledge to deliver safe, effective care.

NURS 5563 – Acute and Chronic Disease Management of the Adult & Older Adult (3 credits)
Builds diagnostic reasoning and management skills for common acute and chronic conditions. Highlights therapeutic decision-making for adult–gerontology populations.

NURS 5565 – AGPCNP Clinical Practicum II: Acute & Chronic Disease Management (5 credits)
Expands clinical proficiency in managing acute and chronic disease. Students refine clinical judgment and progress toward independent NP practice.

NURS 5573 – Synthesis & Transition to Professional Practice (3 credits)
Integrates didactic and clinical learning to support the transition into NP practice. Examines determinants of health, outcome optimization, and care coordination.

NURS 5575 – AGPCNP Clinical Practicum III: Advanced Care Management (5 credits)
Final practicum emphasizing comprehensive clinical management for adult–gerontology patients. Students demonstrate competence in assessment, planning, and treatment.

MSN Clinicals

Clinical hours are integrated across three sequential practicum courses totaling 13 clinical credits. Students complete supervised clinical experiences in outpatient primary care settings serving adolescents, adults, and older adults:

  • NURS 5523 – Clinical Practicum I: Introduction to Adult Primary Care (3 credits)
  • NURS 5565 – Clinical Practicum II: Acute and Chronic Disease Management (5 credits)
  • NURS 5575 – Clinical Practicum III: Advanced Care Management (5 credits)

All clinical experiences must occur in Texas.

MSN Prerequisites & Admissions

  • Current US RN license (unencumbered) uploaded into application
  • Basic statistics course (undergraduate level)
  • BS or BSN degree from nationally-accredited nursing program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in last 60 hours of undergraduate nursing coursework
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in all prior graduate coursework
  • Must be Texas resident; program currently limited to Texas residents only
  • For MSN Nurse Practitioner tracks EXCEPT FNP Online program: Submit completed Nursing MSN Supplemental Application Form as document upload into TWU Graduate Application
  • Two academic or professional references (name, email, phone number) familiar with academic capabilities for letters of recommendation requested through application
  • $50 application fee ($75 for international applicants)

Provisional Admission:

  • Applicants with minimum GPA of 2.5 (but below 3.0) in last 60 semester hours may be considered for provisional admission on individual basis
  • Factors considered: GPA on prior graduate work, scholarly activities, professional leadership, work history
  • Applicants with baccalaureate nursing degree and master’s in another field: GPA from all degrees and post-graduate work considered
  • Provisionally admitted students must complete first 12 semester credit hours with grades of B or better (minimum 9 hours in nursing courses)
  • Will be dismissed if grade of C or lower earned during probationary period

Transfer Credits:

  • Nine semester hours may be transferred for programs requiring 39-44 semester hours
  • Twelve semester hours may be transferred for programs requiring 45+ semester hours
  • Grade of B or higher required in each course for transfer consideration
  • Must provide evidence of eligibility to continue in previous nursing program

Post-Master’s Certificate – AGPCNP

Certificate Clinicals

Certificate students complete the same three sequential clinical practica as MSN students (13 total clinical credits) progressing from introduction to adult primary care through advanced care management. All clinical experiences must occur in Texas.

Certificate Prerequisites & Admissions

  • Current US RN license (unencumbered) uploaded into application
  • Basic statistics course
  • MS or MSN degree from nationally-accredited nursing program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in master’s nursing degree
  • Must be licensed APRN to seek admission to post-master’s certificate program
  • Completion of “3 Ps” with grade of B or better: Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, Advanced Health Assessment for Advanced Nursing Practice
  • Pharmacology course must have been completed within 6 years of anticipated certificate completion (if practicing as APRN credentialed by Texas Board of Nursing; otherwise must repeat)

Program Requirements

Academic Standards:

  • Grade of B or higher required in all required courses
  • Student who earns grade below B (C, D, or F) in two required graduate courses will be removed from nursing program
  • Student who earns grade below B (C, D, or F) twice in same graduate course will be removed from nursing program
  • Must maintain GPA of 3.0 or higher; failure to maintain results in dismissal
  • Grade below B counts toward removal even if course successfully repeated

Time Limit:

  • Graduate students have six years to complete MSN program
  • Semester credit hours older than six years (including transfer courses) cannot apply toward master’s degree or post-master’s certificate

Final Examination:

  • Oral examination of completed professional or clinical project (subject to change)

Tuition

Graduate nursing tuition costs $576 per credit hour for Texas residents (based on $5,184 for 9 credits per semester).

Additional costs per semester:
